A filmmaker intent on making a movie about his unrequited first love receives an unexpected invitation to reconstruct his memories, re-play his past and perhaps even find a new ending to his love story.

PORTADA_WEB NUEVA FINAL.jpg

There’s a sacredness in falling in love for the first time, often an all-encompassing event we can never reprise once it ends.

Traumatic experiences can create beauty in the same way that a movie can make us weep, bridging the gap between pain and enjoyment. This is what made me a filmmaker, chasing that feeling of seeing movies that gently caress the soul. Speaking to the universal core of who we are, regardless of gender, identity, color, and labels, memories are all we have when we are alone, but memory can be sneaky and inaccurate…

And with DUINO we wanted to explore how we romanticize memories which sometimes can blind our path to love in the present. What detonated making the film, was finding real VHS tapes had not seen in years, which defined the aesthetic of the film, with its realistic present, its dreamy past and the chaotic nature of Hi8 found footage.

The visual style of the film is directly affected by Matias’ emotional state, which is contradictory and fragmented, because he needs to rebuild his soul back together, like so many of us do…
